PE's 'mob justice dad' back in court

A 36-year-old Port Elizabeth father will be back in court on Thursday, for the murder of a man he falsely accused of raping his 7-year-old daughter.

Simphiwe Yanta was part of a group of people who allegedly beat 52-year-old Mava Fundakubi to death in Motherwell last month.

He handed himself over to police, days after the mob-killing, after it was established that no rape took place.

The accused told police that he fetched Fundakubi from his home in De Vos Crescent, before assaulting him in the street, with the help of other community members.

Yanta who is in custody appeared briefly in court last month and said he would appoint a private attorney.

The incident has lead to tension in the neighbourhood and police have since met with community members to urge the other suspects to come forward.

The State is opposing bail.
