PE robbers found guilty of murder

Two Port Elizabeth men charged with the murder of five accomplices following a robbery nearly three years ago, have been found guilty in the city's high court.

Judge Nomatamsanqa Beshe also convicted 55-year-old, Mpumelelo Mkize and 34-year-old Mazizi Mbantyoti of robbery and the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

In finding the men guilty of murder, judge Beshe said they had acted with common purpose in the commission of the crime.

They were charged with the murder of their accomplices even though they were shot dead by members of the police's tactical response team following a bank robbery in Kwadwesi in Port Elizabeth in March 2010.

The TRT members involved in the shooting had been exonerated from prosecution.

Presentencing argument will be heard on Friday.
