PE robbers abandon car, stolen goods and gun

A manhunt continues for five suspects who robbed a shop in a mall in Kabega Park, Port Elizabeth on Thursday.

Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says the excellent synergy between members of the South African police was clearly visible when an off duty Sergeant immediately took control of the situation at Metlife Mall.

It is alleged that a cellphone shop was robbed at gunpoint shortly after 10 am and the Sergeant who heard a woman screaming went to investigate.

Janse van Rensburg says video footage was viewed and the getaway car was identified as a silver Mercedez Benz.

She says the car was hijacked in Motherwell last week.

The off duty sergeant immediately called for back-up and colleagues from the AirWing, Flying Squad and the Anti-gang unit responded.

Janse van Rensburg says during the robbery it was established that one of the phones had a tracker, which allowed the SAPS AirWing to assist.

They spotted the vehicle Tshiwula Street, New Brighton and the suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene.

Police searched a nearby flat and recovered 33 cell phones, three tablets and a 9mm pistol with its serial number filed off.

No arrests have been made and the investigation continues.
