PE residents take to the streets in another service delivery protest

A Nelson Mandela Bay municipal vehicle has been torched as residents of Wells Estate took to the streets again in another service delivery protest.

On the 17th of last month they arrived at City Hall where they wanted to present a long list of grievances to mayor, Danny Jordaan.

Community spokesperson, Mnikeli Kawa, said at the time that they wanted him to take up their grievances with the ANC regional task team.

Among a long list of issues were demands around housing and other service delivery matters.

Police spokesperson, Captain Andre' Beetge, says residents set up barricades in the streets of Wells Estate on Wednesday morning.

"Between 5 and 6 o clock this morning we had some sporadic protests taking place in Wells Estate. Several fires were lit in the streets and vehicles torched"

Beetge says any person who knows the identity of the perpetrators must contact police.

Meanwhile, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality spokesperson, Roland Williams, has advised motorists not to enter the Wells Estate area due to the service delivery protests.

He says if motorists do have to enter they must do so with extreme caution and preferably liaise with police.

Williams says the Municipality's Safety and Security Directorate is monitoring the situation in collaboration with police.

Further advisories will be issued during the course of the day.
