Port Elizabeth on Sunday recorded the hottest day in 55 years.
A spokesperson for the South African Weather Service Garth Sampson says 40.2 degrees were recorded on Sunday.
He says it almost reached the record high of 40.7 degrees, measured in March 1965.
Other places that topped the 40-degree mark were Uitenhage (40.6) Coega (43.9) and Addo (40.7)
Sampson says only 9 mm of rain was measured overnight in Port Elizabeth with 6 mm at Joubertina.
Conditions will be cooler over the next 48 hours with some rain expected.
