A Port Elizabeth man has been jailed for life a series of kidnappings and rapes committed in Motherwell between 2011 and 2017.
Twenty-seven-year-old Mzikayise Moyakhe was sentenced in the city's High Court on Monday to one life term and a further 80 years imprisonment following his earlier conviction on the charges which also included robbery with aggravating circumstances.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, said that Moyakhe had targeted young women walking alone at night in Units 9 and 10 in Motherwell.
"The accused would threaten them with a knife and stones and would drag them to secluded places, rob them of their possessions and subsequently rape them," he said.
Kinana said his victims were aged between 16 and 20 at the time.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga, has welcomed the sentence imposed on Moyakhe.
She also commended the work of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit who she said "worked meticulously and with dedication on the cases" to ensure the conviction and sentence.
