Two people from Kwazakhele in Port Elizabeth have been arrested on charges of public violence.
Police say they were part of a group of people who assaulted a man accused of raping a six-year-old girl on Saturday.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Office Dumile Gwavu, says residents also stoned an ambulance that arrived to treat the severely beaten rape suspect.
He says police also had to use rubber bullets to disperse the crowd on Monday.
Gwavu says two men aged 26 and 51 were subsequently arrested.
He says police are warning the public not take the law into their own hands.
