The Port Elizabeth suburb of Newton Park received a substantial 78.2 millimetres of rain on Sunday and Monday - forcing the closure of the well-known 3rd avenue dip.
The PE branch of the SA weather service says of that amount, 62.2 mm was measured on Monday - that downpour caused localized flooding in a number of streets in Newton Park as storm water drains battled to cope with the deluge.
Wavelengths Construction site agent Gerrie van Vuuren says they've now had to close the 3rd avenue dip in Newton Park to allow time to repair the Temporary Bypass road which was damaged due to the heavy rainfall. "We estimate the repairs to be complete in two to three days," he said.
Meanwhile: the Port Elizabeth airport received 24 mm of rain up until 8 o'clock on Tuesday morning, bringing the total for the past two days to 36.8 mm.
Uitenhage enjoyed 35.8 mm of rain over the same period.
The catchment areas seem to have missed out, however, with Joubertina receiving a mere 1.4 mm, Kareedouw 2, Kouga Dam 1.5 and Patensie 2.6 over the past two days.
Swartkops, which feeds the Groendal dam at Uitenhage fared better, receiving 23.1 mm
