A 48-year-old Port Elizabeth businessman was shot and wounded when he went to the rescue of a courier company driver who was being held at gunpoint by four men.
The drama unfolded in Govan Mbeki Avenue on Tuesday morning when the courier driver was accosted by an armed assailant and ordered to hand over the vehicle's keys. His three accomplices then joined in.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, says the owner of a nearby shop witnessed the incident and, armed with his firearm, rushed to the driver's aid.
"As he shouted at the suspects, three ran away. There was an exchange of gunfire and the civilian was shot twice (in the abdomen and leg). It is not clear at this stage if any one of the suspects sustained any injuries," Naidu said.
The wounded man was taken to a hospital in a private car.
"Nothing was taken and police are investigating a case of attempting hijacking and attempted murder," she said.
