PE primary marred by issues on first day

Several pupils missed out on their fist day of school at the St Albans Primary School outside Port Elizabeth.

The school's retired principal Hendrik Coleman says this is due to the government suspending the school transport subsidy for needy pupils.

He says only 300 of the school's 480 pupils arrived for the first day of school.

Coleman, who retired from teaching in December last year, says an official from Bisho is currently meeting with parents and the School Governing Body to find a solution.

He says in order for pupils to qualify for the transport subsidy, they have to attend a school in the area where they live.

Coleman says the problem is that most of those schools do not have Afrikaans teachers.

AlgoaFM news have since learned that the school is indeed open even though many did not make it on their first day of school.

Attempts to get hold of the Department have been unsuccessful.
