PE police searching for missing fisherman

Port Elizabeth police and rescue teams are searching for a 39-year-old fisherman, who is suspected to have drowned at Sundays River Mouth.

Captain André Beetge said missing Jacques Schamrel's friend, Ockert Erasmus, alerted the police at around 6 am on Thursday.

He said Erasmus told the police that they were on a week-long fishing expedition.

Beetge said both their boats were anchored in the middle of the river mouth when he fell asleep and left Scharmrel fishing.

"When he woke up at about 6 am, he noticed that his friend was gone from the boat and after spotting his friend's clothing on the shore, he beached the boat there and searched for his friend in the sand dunes," he said.

Beetge said Erasmus called Schamerl's wife at around 9 am, who in turn notified the police.

Any person that might have information that could assist police can call 08600 10111 or Kinkelbos police station at 041 468 0440.
