Port Elizabeth police are searching for a gardener who is missing after the bodies of his elderly employers were found in their Summerstrand home on Monday morning.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Alwin Labans, said a handyman arriving at the property in Scott Street found the bodies of the couple in their seventies.
He said that the man phoned the couple's daughter who arrived with her husband and alerted police.
"The police kicked down one of the doors inside (the main house) and they found the two elderly people, a husband and wife. They found them tied up and they had open wounds to the head," Labans said.
He said an axe was found next to their bodies adding that the house had also been ransacked.
Labans said the couple was last seen alive on Saturday afternoon by some of the student residents who rent units at the back of the main house.
The names of the victims will be released once their next of kin are informed.
Police will also be examining CCTV footage of the street outside the home which could assist in the murder investigation.
