Serial rapist accused in court in Mthatha

A 28-year-old man, who allegedly used Facebook to lure his victims, and his girlfriend, will on Monday appear in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court on charges of rape, murder and possession of stolen property.

Police arrested the pair on Friday following an investigation into the murder and rape of women from Alice, Duncan Village, Mthatha, Tabankulu and Mount Fletcher.

Spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said the suspected serial rapist and multiple murderer lured his victims using a Facebook account with a fake profile and picture.

”It is alleged that the suspect invited women on Facebook. He would then arrange to meet his victims in Qumbu, sending them cash for transport using money transfer services at two major retail outlets,” said Fatyela.

Once they arrived in Qumbu, the accused would make up an excuse for sending someone else to fetch them.

”However, the suspect himself would pitch up pretending to be the ‘other person’ sent to fetch the female and would thereafter take his victims to Ngcalukeni fields, where he raped and in some instances, killed the women.”

The arrested man faces three counts of murder and four of rape.

Police recovered cell phones, handbags and clothing belonging to the victims at the homes of the suspect and his 21-year-old girlfriend. She has been charged with possession of stolen property.
