Members of the Tactical Response Team in Port Elizabeth were involved in a shoot out with suspected car hijackers in Zwide on Thursday.
Captain Andre Beetge says members received information of a hijacked Blue VW Polo in Zwide and found it parked close to a maroon Mercedez Benz sedan in Mtshakaza Street.
Two occupants of the Mercedes ran into a nearby house while the other occupants of the vehicle sped off - shots were fired but the suspects got away.
Beetge says the two men who fled into the house were also able to give police the slip.
However, the Polo was left behind and was positively identified by police as a vehicle that had been hijacked in Kwanobuhle in February.
On searching the vehicle, an R5 assault rifle and two pistols were found and confiscated by police.
