Port Elizabeth police are investigating the rape of two NMMU students from Limpopo.
Police spokesperson, Constable Mncedi Mbombo, said the two women, aged 19 and 20, had taken a taxi from south campus on Wednesday to visit a friend in the city.
"Inside the taxi was the driver and the conductor. Instead of driving to the terminus the driver drove to New Brighton Township where he dropped of his conductor and threatened the girls with a firearm," he said.
"According to the women the driver took them to a place in New Brighton which is unknown to them. He then raped the 20-year-old women before taking both of them to an unknown RDP house in the township where raped the second student."
Mbombo said that the two women were "released" at 6am on Thursday morning. He said they met a nurse who took them to the New Brighton police station where a case was opened.
"Two cases of rape were registered for investigation. No arrest have been made yet and anyone with information that can assist the police to arrest the suspect can please contact the nearest police station," said Mbombo.
