Port Elizabeth police are investigating a case of rape of a 24- year old mentally challenged woman.
Police spokesperson, warrant officer Dumile Gwavu says the case has been handed over to the Family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit .
Gwavu says no arrests have been made.
According to Social Worker Pamela Rubushe, the woman who was admitted to Dora Nginza Hospital last month, had been raped by a man at his home in Motherwell since 2009.
Rubushe told AlgoaFM News that her patient was taken in by the late wife of the alleged rapist and once the wife had passed on, her patient continued to live there.
She says the alleged rapist calls the centre to intimidate social workers and to inquire about the woman.
Rubushe says the woman who is now pregnant is scared and does not want to return to the house in Motherwell.
"The concerns are her safety, she is vulnerable as a mentally retarded person who has a history of abuse and neglect by someone who is not related to her, who has been keeping her against her will and exploiting her vulnerability as a retarded person." says Rubushe.
