Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Ben Fihla and other mayors in the Eastern Cape will be required to submit quarterly progress reports on the implementation of the Audit Improvement Plan to the provincial department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
Nelson Mandela Bay received a qualified audit in 2012/13 for the second year in succession.
Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Fikile Xasa said in his Policy Speech on Wednesday that the Auditor-General had identified low levels of accountability as a contributing factor to the slow pace at which audit outcomes were improving.
Xasa said mayors had been requested to submit an Audit Improvement Plan to his department to turn the situation around in their municipalities.
