SA poultry industry bleeds

The South African poultry industry is bleeding to the core as a result of cheap chicken imported from overseas, especially the European Union.

That's according to the CEO of the South African Poultry Association, Kevin Lovell.

He told Algoa FM News that seven major commercial producers had been liquidated, while other companies were in business rescue proceedings.

Lovell said more than 1000 jobs were lost in the past year, and major local producers were losing millions of rands every week.

"All cases that relate to the same problem is that the developed world does not want to eat all of the chicken, but you have to sell all the parts of the chicken. Countries like us are a good place for that chicken to go because we have a good market and a good payment system. We've had long term problems with dumping and I expect we will have new problems from countries in the future I don't know about yet." says Lovell.
