Kabega Park Police in Port Elizabeth are investigating a case of house robbery and attempted murder.
Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says the incident happened at around 20.15 on Monday night at a smallholding on the Tembani Road in Greenbushes.
A 48-year-old man and his 23-year-old cousin were at home and while the cousin was watching television with the doors open - three suspects entered, one of whom was armed with a firearm.
They ordered the young man to be quiet and took his cell phone before proceeding to the bedroom where they surprised the older complainant.
Three shots were fired and the 48-year-old man then threw an axe at his attackers who fled the scene on foot.
The complainant was shot in his left side and taken to Livingston hospital for treatment.
