The Port Elizabeth K9 unit confiscated a large number of abalone and arrested a suspect for the contravention of the Marine Living Resources Act in separate incidents near Flat Rocks along Marine Drive on Saturday.
Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says members were busy with patrols in the area when they received information of three suspects allegedly busy with abalone poaching.
She says police found the suspects still in the water and a 40-year old man was arrested for being in possession of 15 undersized units of abalone, as well as live periwinkles, sandworms and an octopus.
He will appear in court on Monday.
The other two suspects were issued a fine for collecting sandworms for fishing without a permit.
In the second incident on Saturday evening, police noticed a blue VW Polo parked in bushes opposite the Humewood Golf Club.
Janse van Rensburg says as police approached the vehicle, it drove off and a high-speed chase ensued.
She says the passenger later threw a plastic bag out of the window.
It contained 269 units of abalone.
The suspects are still at large.
