PE police arrest two suspects for attempted hijacking

File

Port Elizabeth police arrested two suspects soon after they failed to hijack a vehicle in Algoa Park on Saturday afternoon.

Spokesperson, Colonel Pricilla Naidu says it is alleged that the driver of a Toyota Corolla, approximately 50-years-old, got into his vehicle in the parking lot of a shopping centre in St Leonard's Road when he was approached by two men, both aged 29.

She says the driver's window was slightly open and one suspect attempted to pull the keys from the ignition.

The driver resisted and as he tried to drive away, one of the suspects stood in front of the car.

Naidu says bystanders yelled at the suspects, and the driver managed to drive off and reported the incident at the Algoa Park police station.

Crime Prevention members in the area responded and the suspects were arrested soon afterwards.

They are being detained on a charge of attempted hijacking and will appear in the New Brighton Magistrate's Court on Monday.
