Eastern Cape police management welcomed the life sentences imposed on Mdantsane serial rapist, Malibongwe Ncokolo (46), and heaped praise on the detectives behind it.
Ncokolo was sentenced in the Bhisho High Court on Friday to a further 330 years imprisonment for his reign of terror that started in 2014 and ended with his arrest in 2017.
He was linked to several of the crimes through his DNA.
The two detectives responsible for securing the conviction and hefty sentence were Sergeant Sizwe Gaika of the Mdantsane Family Violence and Child Protection Unit and Warrant Officer Phumelele Tile, of Mdantsane SAPS detectives, who received high praise from provincial police management.
Acting Eastern Cape Police Commissioner, Major-General Thembisile Patekile said he was delighted by the work of the detectives which “resulted in the successful prosecution of the accused.”
He said the court undoubtedly convicted and sentenced Ncokolo on the basis of the quality of the evidence and investigation.
Provincial police spokesperson, Captain Khaya Tonjeni, said Ncokolo’s trial commenced in September 2020 before Judge Belinda Stretcher, with 140 witnesses including 22 victims and rape survivors, aged between nine and 15.
He said Ncokolo was convicted and sentenced on three charges of murder, 22 counts of rape and sexual assault, and nine counts of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, among other charges.
