Port Elizabeth police have arrested an alleged armed robbery suspect and confiscated a stolen firearm.
Spokesperson, Colonel Pricilla Naidu says a 28-year-old man and his brother, travelling on the N2 from Humansdorp to Port Elizabeth on Friday, stopped their truck on the side of the freeway near Baywest Mall to replace a tyre, when a white Toyota Yaris with four men stopped behind them.
She says they jumped out and one threatened the brothers with a firearm and demanded money.
The suspects fled with cash, four boxes of cigarettes and two cellphones.
Naidu says a patrolling traffic officer noticed the incident and chased after them.
She says police found two boxes of cigarettes and the false numbers plates of the vehicle in Sherwood, as well as a 47-year-old man on a pavement with a gunshot wound to his thigh.
It is alleged that the suspect jumped out of the Toyota Yaris and was trying to jump over a boundary wall when he accidentally shot himself.
A 9mm pistol was found in the yard and the suspect was arrested at the scene.
The Yaris was later found abandoned at a carwash in New Brighton.
The suspect will appear in court soon on charges of the illegal possession of a firearm and discharging of a firearm in a residential area.
