Four police members from Makhanda have appeared in the Grahamstown Magistrate’s Court on charges of theft.
The National Prosecuting Authority says Sergeant Lesley Sauls and Constable Justine Freeman, both stationed at the Joza Police Station appeared on Friday for allegedly stealing alcohol from a South African Breweries truck, which overturned in the city in October last year.
NPA spokesperson, Anelisa Ngcakani says members of the community started looting the truck, and when Sauls and Freeman arrived at the scene, they apparently took some alcohol.
They then allegedly sold some of it to a local tavern.
They were each granted R500 bail and their next court appearance will be on 14 December.
Meanwhile, Warrant Officer Lawrence Van Ross and Sergeant Gareth Prince, from the same police station, were arrested on Wednesday and appeared in court for allegedly stealing cigarettes after raiding a residence which allegedly violated lockdown regulations.
Ngcakani says they conducted the raid on 5 June and booked only a third of the confiscated cartons.
She says it is still unknown what they did with the rest.
They were also granted bail of R500 each and will be back in court on 11 December.
