The Western Cape Hawks arrested two Port Elizabeth men in connection with fraud and corruption linked to a roadworthy scam.
The men, aged 44 and 53, were arrested in Malabar on Wednesday night by members of the Hawks from the Western Cape as part of an ongoing investigation into a syndicate accused of processing of fraudulent vehicle roadworthy certificates at a centre in Jeffreys Bay.
Hawks spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel, Philani Nkwalase, said six other people from Port Elizabeth, Jeffreys Bay and Cape Town were already arrested in connection with this scam and were granted bail of two-thousand rands each.
He said the two PE men in the latest arrest will appear in the Vredenburg Magistrate's court on Friday.
"They were linked to a syndicate which was operating where vehicle details from Cape Town were sent to a testing centre in Jefferey's Bay through some of the runners which were operating in PE and then without being tested, given roadworthy certificates in exchange for bribes," explained Nkwalase.
He added, "After their first court appearance on Friday, they will then be expected to appear before the regional court with the rest of the previously arrested suspects on the 16th of October."
