Two Kwazulu-Natal police officers suspected of breaking into a post office have been killed in a shootout with police in Dalton near Greytown.
Detectives say the incident took place in the early hours of Thursday morning while members from Crime Intelligence, the Hawks and the National Intervention Unit were busy with operations in the area.
The police's Vishnu Naidoo says the teams were travelling between Greytown and Dalton at around 02h00 when they spotted a police patrol vehicle. "They stopped the vehicle to speak to the members but instead, the sergeant in the police vehicle opened fire on them compelling the officers to return fire."
Brigadier Naidoo says a 40-year-old male sergeant and a 33-year-old female constable inside the police patrol vehicle were shot and killed. "After the shooting, the police vehicle was searched and implements including an angle grinder and jackhammer were found inside, along with cash believed to have been stolen from the Dalton post office."
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate IPID is investigating the incident.
