A man from Port Elizabeth is in police custody following a murder in Helenvale in the city's Northern Areas on Tuesday.
Police Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the 42-year-old Preston Dunsten was walking with a friend in Reginald Street just before 11 pm when they were approached by a suspect, who was known to them.
She says the man demanded Dunsten's cellphone and stabbed him in his chest when he said he did not have one.
Colonel Naidu says the suspect fled and Dunsten ran into a nearby house where he collapsed and died.
Police worked through the night to find the suspect and tracked him down at 7.30 am on Wednesday where he was walking in Reginald Street.
He is expected to appear in the Gelvandale Magistrates' Court on Friday on a charge of murder.
