A 35-year-old man who was arrested for an armed robbery in Port Elizabeth in 2017 has been acquitted on all charges against him.
Xolisa Mzongwana from Kwadwesi was in custody for 17 months.
Police Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says Mzongwana was arrested shortly after an armed robbery at the Debonairs and Steers outlet in Cape Road on the 24th of November 2017.
Three men, two with firearms, robbed the outlet and stole cash, cellphones and a customer's wallet before fleeing in a VW Polo.
Naidu says details of the car were circulated and police finally spotted it in Mission Road.
The suspects fired shots and police retaliated. The men eventually crashed the car and two suspects managed to flee from the scene.
Naidu says Mzongwana and his friend Phumlani Jokozela were arrested.
The 32-year-old Jokozela was found guilty on two charges of armed robbery and sentenced to 12 years in prison.
During the arrest, police confiscated all the stolen goods and two firearms.
