A Port Elizabeth man, Brent Cunningham, will remain in custody until the end the month.
That's when his bail application is expected to be finalised in the city's magistrate's court.
Cunningham on Friday pleaded not guilty to one count of common assault and two count of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The charges relate to the alleged assault of his girlfriend, Shireen Ballan and two other people in December.
Ballan had been hospitalised after the incident.
She submitted an affidavit to court requesting that the charges be withdrawn against Cunningham.
However, the state said it would still pursue the case against 21-year-old Cunningham.
