DA MP, Zakhele Mbele, will be attending the court appearance of a Port Elizabeth man who threw his child off the roof a shack during a service delivery protest.
Mbele said “what the father did, endangering his own child for the sake of a political protest amounts to gross domestic abuse,” he said.
‘We urge all police members, especially those who work in the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) units, to work diligently to bring justice to the victims and survivors of sexual abuse and domestic violence,” he said.
Mbele said they will also use the opportunity to applaud Metro police Constable, Luyolo Nojulumba, who caught the child before she hit the ground.
The incident happened last week during a protest by people who were trying to prevent the Municipality demolishing illegally erected structures.
The man climbed on to the roof of a shack with his young baby girl and when police approached him, he threw the child from the roof and into the arms of Nojulumba, who received an official commendation for “bravery and heroism”.
The child was returned to her mother.
The father faces a charge of attempted murder when he appears in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
