A 25-year old man drowned after being caught in a rip current near the Beach View Holiday Resort in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Alwin Labans says the man and a woman, also in her twenties, had been instructed by life guards to stay clear of the area, as the beach was closed.
Labans says a group of people were drinking at the time and ignored the request from the life guards.
He says the woman was airlifted from the area, but the man, Billy King from Jacksonville was declared dead at the scene.
