The Tactical Task Force made its first abalone bust of 2016 on Wednesday night, when a 21 year-old man was arrested while trying to leave the Cape Recife Nature Reserve in Port Elizabeth.
TTS spokesperson Tom Swartz told AlgoaFM news that the suspect had entered the reserve without a permit and that he was stopped at the boom when he tried to leave at around 9pm.
Swartz says they recovered two bags containing 156 units of abalone worth several thousand Rand.
The vehicle and the abalone were confiscated, and the young man spent his 21st birthday in custody.
Swartz says he'll appear in court on Friday.
