PE lifer gets life

A convict found guilty of the murder of a prison guard and escaping from lawful custody has been sentenced to a second life term in prison.

Forty-year-old Sithembile Msutwana was already serving a life sentence when he shot and killed 37-year old prison guard, Zolile Funde, during an escape attempt from Livingstone Hospital in 2010.

Judge Tami Beshe also sentenced Msutwana on Tuesday to 20 years imprisonment for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and three years for escaping from lawful custody.

Judge Beshe said Msutwana had showed no regard for order and authority and that based on his previous convictions and Funde's murder, it was unlikely he could be rehabilitated.

Msutwana was already serving a life sentence at St Albans Prison for crimes that included attempted murder and the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition when he killed Funde.
