A 15-year-old learner from Westering High School in Port Elizabeth is fighting for his life in the Greenacres Hospital following a traumatic family ordeal which claimed the life of his 13-year-old sister.

Matthew Ingram and his 13-year-old sister Tammy were rushed to hospital alongside their parents over the weekend after the entire family became sick in the middle of the night on Saturday.

The family, who reside in a complex in Richie Street in Kageba Park could have been poisoned.

According to an article published in the Herald on Tuesday, one of the units in the complex had been fumigated.

Police Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says Matthew's condition remains critical.

On the Westering High School Facebook Page, the school said that Matthew is currently in an induced coma in the Greenacres Hospital and his kidneys have stopped functioning.

The school asked parents and learners for their prayers.

Detectives in Kabega Park have since opened an inquest docket.

Spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, says investigations are ongoing and police will be probing all avenues in finding out what transpired including interviewing the fumigation company.
