A Port Elizabeth lawyer has been convicted of theft, fraud and forgery in the city's Commercial Crimes Court.
The case against Rodney Mella arose from a road accident fund claim on behalf of a client who was injured in an accident in 2004.
The court found that Mella had stolen more than R56 800 rand in trust money which was the property of his client.
He was convicted on the fraud charge for pretending to his client that the Road Accident Fund had offered a settlement of more than R20 000 when in fact the RAF had offered a settlement of R75 000.
Mella was convicted on a charge of forgery for altering the settlement amount on a document.
