Quick action by Port Elizabeth police led to the arrest of a hijacking suspect and the recovery of a stolen vehicle.
Police spokesperson, warrant officer Alwin Labans, says the drama was over within half an hour of three men robbing a car salesman in Algoa Park of a large amount of cash and hijacking a Free State registered BMW M-5, at around 7-30 this morning.
He says the owner of the BMW was shot twice by the gunmen who fled in a Mercedes Benz.
Labans says a police reservist who heard the shots, alerted police and a member of the K-9 unit recovered the hijacked BMW in Olienhout Street in Algoa Park where it had been abandonded by the gang.
He says another police unit then caught up with the fleeing gang at Njoli Square where one suspect was arrested and a Mercedes Benz C-320 recovered.
The other two suspects managed to evade arrest.
Labans paid tribute to the K-9 unit and the police's radio control unit for the quick response.
