Eastern Cape Economic Development MEC, Sakhumzi Somyo, has revealed that the proposed Algoa Bay fish farm will be a project to breed Yellowtail.
In a written reply to a question by DA MPL, Ross Purdon, Somyo said the Algoa Bay Sea Cage Farming project is one of four Acquaculture Development Zones identified as part of government's Operation Phakisa initiative.
These are a Kob farming expansion project in the East London IDZ, an oyster farm in Hamburg, Abalone and Finfish farming project at Qholorha and the Yellow Tail project in Algoa Bay.
MEC Somyo says these four projects are planned to be completed by 2019.
Purdon, who's the DA spokesperson on Economic Development in the Bhisho Legislature, says despite the enormous public outcry it's evident that the ANC led government is forging ahead with the controversial Algoa Bay fish farm.
He says while mindful of the need for economic development in the province, the siting of the proposed fish farm off Hobie Beach could impact on tourism to the Metro.
"The DA will continue to monitor developments regarding this process. I have sent questions to the MEC for further clarity on the lack of public participation, the outcome of the EIA and details about the expansion of the project," Purdon said.
