A Port Elizabeth father has been charged with murder after allegedly killing a man whom he thought had raped his 7-year-old daughter.
The drama unfolded late on Saturday evening in Motherwell when it was suspected that the 52-year-old Mava Fundakubi raped the little girl.
The 36-year-old father handed himself over to police on Tuesday after it was established that no rape took place.
Police Spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge said the man told police that he fetched Mr Fundakubi from his home in De Vos Crescent, before assaulting him in the street, with the help of other community members.
He said the assault took place while the child and her mother were at the clinic. It is there where it was established that no rape took place.
Police have now charged the father with murder and will be looking for his accomplices.
The Cluster Commander for Motherwell, Major General Dawie Rabie warned communities that mob justice will not be tolerated.
He said an innocent man was killed by members of the community, because of a rumour.
The father will appear in court soon.
