A search was underway for a Port Elizabeth father and his son who have been reported missing at sea at Beachview.
The NSRI said the 35-year-old man, his 10-year-old son from Beachview and a 16-year-old nephew launched a canoe to go fishing in calm seas at approximately 6pm on Saturday.
Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said the craft is believed to have capsized about an hour later, adding that the teenager swam to shore at 20h15 to raise the alarm.
“The missing man’s wife and her sister went to the scene where they located the canoe washed ashore".
He said various role players, including the SAPS, NSRI, Coastal Rescue and member of the local community police forum joined in.
“Up to 50 people were deployed in this search effort. The canoe and fishing gear were recovered from the shoreline. It is believed that they were not wearing life jackets,” Lambinon said.
Despite an extensive sea and shoreline search along 3 km of coastline and 1 kilometre out to sea, no sign of the father and his son has been found.
He said a police dive unit will continue in an ongoing search operation.
