A Port Elizabeth doctor accused of shooting his wife in the face as been denied bail in the Port Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
The 50-year-old Mkhuseli Boto has been in custody for nearly two months.
Boto was arrested at his house in Summerstrand in August after police were called out to a domestic violence complaint.
The 36-year-old victim, who went to the house to get some of her belongings, was confronted by her estranged husband who allegedly shot her in the jaw.
While paramedics were attending to the wife, Boto locked himself in the bedroom where he injected himself with an unknown substance.
During the bail hearing, it came to light that Boto suffered from depression and diabetes for which he was receiving treatment.
In handing down her judgment Magistrate Ramona van Vuuren says the court upholds the consideration that Boto is a threat to his wife.
Van Vuuren further says incarceration at St Albans is definitely not to Boto's detriment and found the prison to be fully equipped to provide him with the necessary medication.
Boto is facing a charge of attempted murder and will be back in court on the 14th of November for a trial date to be set.
