PE cops seize R1.5m in counterfeit goods

Supplied

Port Elizabeth police say they have dealt a blow to the trade in counterfeit goods following a raid this week in which R1.5 million in fakes products were seized.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the joint operation was carried out by Port of Ngqura Border Policing and patent attorneys, Spoor and Fisher.

She said police accompanied by a representative from the patent attorney’s office searched the shop at a Kabega Park Mall and counterfeit goods mainly perfumes and board games were confiscated at the retail store.

“A warning was issued to the store manager for contravention of patent laws through trading in counterfeit goods. The goods were handed over to registered patent attorneys for storage,” she said.

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Liziwe Ntshinga welcomed the seizure, saying the illicit trade in counterfeit goods harms the economy.
