Police in Port Elizabeth have launched a manhunt for four suspects who were involved in a chase and shoot-out with police in Bethelsdorp.
Police Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says flying squad members were on their way home on Wednesday evening when they heard a report of shooting via radio control.
Members spotted the vehicle in Rensburg Street and gave chase.
Naidu says the blue VW Golf travelling in the opposite direction of Rensburg Street briefly stopped before one suspect got out and fled on foot.
A chase continued through several streets with shots being fired in the direction of police.
She says during the chase one of the suspects threw a bag out of the window which was picked up by members of SAPS.
The bag contained 18 firearms consisting of pistols and revolvers.
During the shoot-out police fatally wounded the 25-year-old driver who, as a result, lost control of his vehicle and hit a boundary wall.
Three other men managed to get out of the car and fled on foot.
Police are investigating cases of attempted murder on police, illegal possession of Firearms and ammunition as well as murder.
