Several police clusters in the Eastern Cape worked together on Wednesday to arrest eight suspects who allegedly committed an armed robbery in King Williams Town.
Spokesperson Captain Mali Govender says the men allegedly robbed a retail outlet in the afternoon and stole several cell phones and cash, before fleeing in two vehicles.
She says it was suspected that the suspects were on their way to Peddie and neighbouring clusters from Alice, Makhanda, King Williams Town, East London and Port Alfred were immediately alerted, who blocked all entry and exit routes on the province roads.
Govender says members from Makhanda's Crime Intelligence received information that one of the cars, a silver Corsa, was travelling on the N2 and it was finally stopped just outside of Peddie.
Police arrested three suspects and recovered several phones suspected to have been taken from the robbery.
The second vehicle, a white Chev Aveo, was stopped outside Makhanda where police made 5 arrests and recovered four firearms and cell phones.
Govender says the men will appear in court soon where they will be charged with armed robbery and the possession of unlicensed firearms and unlawful possession of ammunition.
