The Eastern Cape Health Department is pleading for public assistance in tracing the relatives of an elderly patient who died last month in the Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth.
The 74-year-old Izak Gabriel Hartzenberg, who suffered from prostate cancer, was admitted to Hospital on the 16th of March and died nine days later on the 25th.
A Social worker for the Department of Health Tiny Toyiya says according to their records Hartzenberg lived alone at The Beaches Flats in Humewood with his cat.
She says recently, the caretaker of The Beaches had to open the flat after several residents complained of an unbearable smell coming from the apartment.
Sadly, the caretaker found Hartzenberg's cat, already dead.
Toyiya told Algoa FM News, when Mr Hartzenberg was admitted to hospital he only had his drivers licence on him and a thousand rand in cash.
She says he did not even have a phone and during his nine days in hospital he had no visitors.
Update: Mr Hartzenberg's daughter who lives in Pretoria has made contact with the social worker after reading our story.
