PE bread delivery driver robbed

A 20-year old suspect was arrested by members of the Anti-Gang Unit in Port Elizabeth's northern areas after a bread delivery driver was robbed on Saturday.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu says it is alleged that the 32-year-old driver was waiting in the van while his crew went into a wholesale supermarket in Bloemendal to deliver bread when two men approached the vehicle.

She says one of them jumped into the truck, threatened the driver with a firearm and demanded money.

Naidu says an undisclosed amount of money was taken before the suspects fled the scene.

She says patrolling Anti-Gang Unit members noticed the suspects running and immediately gave chase.

One suspect managed to get away, while the other was arrested.

Police confiscated a 9mm pistol, of which the serial number was filed off.

The suspect is being detained on a charge of robbery and the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition and is expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

The search for the other suspect is continuing.
