PE Beachfront accident: State says pilot is a flight risk, opposing bail

A Zimbabwean National who is being charged with culpable homicide, drunk, reckless and negligent driving will have to spend another five nights in the holding cells in Port Elizabeth.

The qualified pilot Kelvin Zirema allegedly killed a pedestrian and critically injured another in an accident along the Beachfront in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says it is alleged that Zirema was driving in an Audi A4 in the right lane towards Kings Beach when he hit two pedestrians near the McDonald's intersection, killing one instantly.

The deceased was identified as the 36-year-old Anthony Agbo from Nigeria.

According to police, Agbo had only been in the country for a couple of days.

Naidu says it is further alleged that Zirema then lost control of the vehicle and collided into four stationary cars parked near the Humewood Hotel.

Zirema allegedly fled the scene but was arrested shortly afterwards.

The Investigating Officer in the case testified in the bail hearing on Thursday and told the court that Zirema was in the country on a student visa which was valid from 2010 until December 2014.

The accused then obtained several visitor Visa's to remain in the country. His last Visa, however, expired in September last year and his current Passport will expire in August.

The State is opposing bail on the grounds that he has no fixed address and is in the country illegally.

Judgement for bail will be handed down on Tuesday the 21st of May.
