The South African Police Service is warning Eastern Cape residents of an emerging scam involving bogus police officers.
SAPS provincial spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana says they've learnt with a concern of reports of unknown criminal elements masquerading as police detectives and soliciting large sums of money from unsuspecting relatives of those arrested by the police.
He says these criminal elements are introducing themselves as senior police officers who are bringing information in exchange for money to get suspects released by the SA Police Service.
Brigadier Kinana is warning the public that it is not the practice of SAPS detectives to request funds from the complainants or relatives of those arrested for committing crimes in exchange for services rendered.
Anyone receiving calls or approaches of this nature is asked to immediately reject them and to contact their nearest police station.
He says at the moment they are investigating five different cases in the Province where people have been scammed out of thousands.
