A day after the SA Police Service released crime statistics, two Eastern Cape paramedics were held at gunpoint and robbed in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth.
Eastern Cape Health Department spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo, says an ambulance was summoned late on Tuesday night to an address in Madala Street.
He says when ambulance personnel arrived, they were accosted by two gunmen who robbed the paramedics of wallets, cellphones and the keys to the ambulance.
Kupelo says this kind of criminal activity will impact negatively on the delivery of emergency medical services.
"We will now have to ensure that there is a police escort, before we dispatch an ambulance, especially in these areas. We call on the community to work together with government and police" he said.
