Patriotic Alliance says negotiations in NMBM have reached a sensitive point

Residents of Nelson Mandela Bay will have to wait another day for the Patriotic Alliance's announcement on whether or not it will support the bid to oust Athol Trollip as the mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay.

This is according to the PA's councillor, in the metro, Marlon Daniels.

The PA's President, Gayten Mckenzie, told the media on Monday that it would announce it's decision on Tuesday, however, Daniels says the party is still not ready.

Daniels says negotiations between parties are still ongoing and have hit a very sensitive point.

"The Patriotic Alliance was very hopeful that it would come with the decision on Tuesday to inform the residents of Nelson Mandela Bay as to what we are going to do regarding the motion of no confidence against the mayor, Athol Trollip. Unfortunately, negotiations are tough and very sensitive. I can confirm that we are in nobody's corner as we speak and the PA's yet to come up with the final decision, which shall be taken within the next 24 hours," he said.

The PA vowed to let the residents know before Thursday morning when the highly anticipated council meeting is scheduled to take place.

He said the PA had been talking with both the ANC and the DA, however, the EFF's national leadership had not made contact with the PA yet.

"For some reason, they have not regarded any of the minority parties as important to sit around the table and talk," Daniels added.

He said only the EFF in the region had been in talks with the PA.

"There is no discussion between Julius and our president, Gayten Mckenzie, and it's not assisting anybody but we will make a decision by no later than Wednesday," he said.

Daniels said the "black caucus", made up of the ANC, EFF, UDM, AIC, PA and the UF, would also be meeting on Tuesday.

He said the "Black Caucus" was still not aware who the ANC would put forward as their mayoral candidate.

"I expect us to meet during the course of the day and hopefully we can finalise things and we are waiting on the EFF to come back to confirm whether they are going to accept the candidate that will be put up by the ANC," Daniels said.

Trollip's fate as mayor rests on the PA's decision as other opposition parties have declared that they will support the EFF's motion.

The DA-led coalition has 59 seats while the ANC has 50, EFF 6, UDM 2 and the PA, AIC and the United Front have one seat each.

The EFF will need all opposition parties, outside the coalition, to pass its motion.
