Police in the Langkloof in the Eastern Cape are searching for two suspects after an elderly man was assaulted in his farmhouse on Sunday.
Police captain Gerda Swart says the 74-year-old man's farm is on the border between Joubertina and Kareedouw.
She says the suspects tried to break in through a window but the complainant managed to scare them off.
When he went into his bedroom a short while later, they surprised him where he was assaulted with a snooker cue.
He suffered a number of blows to the face.
The suspects grabbed a handbag and fled.
No one else was injured in the incident.
